Considerations for Treatment.
The primary reason that an addict continues to use drugs, in spite of the consequences, is not because of the euphoria that it once produced, but to avoid the withdrawal symptoms associated with the cessation of its use. When an addict quits using a drug, the withdrawal symptoms are opposite of the effects that the drug produced. For example, the use of opiates, such as heroin, causes euphoria, "nodding or dozing off" and constipation. However, withdrawal from an addictive substance is characterized by the following symptoms, usually lasting less than a week, depending on how long and at what dosage it has been consumed:
