Tolerance - Pain Management gone wrong. Advanced Pain Treatment

Diminishing returns.

Considerations for Treatment.

Drug Tolerance: A state of progressively decreasing responsiveness to a drug. In other words, a larger dose is required to achieve effect originally obtained by a smaller dose. Tolerance should not be confused with physical dependence, which is an entirely different phenomenon that is revealed by withdrawing the drug and noting the occurrence of withdrawal symptoms. The mechanisms involved in the development of tolerance are:

Metabolic: Based on an increase in the number and activity of liver enzymes that alter the form of the drug so that it may be eliminated via the kidneys.

Cellular Adaptive: neurons in the brain adapt to the continued presence of a drug (increase number of receptors - more drug needed to occupy them or reducing their sensitivity)

Homeostatic: Finds its basis in classical conditioning, where environmental cues (conditioned stimuli) are associated with drug administration (unconditioned stimulus), eliciting a bodily reaction in the opposite direction of the drug effect (conditioned response).

You should not stop taking opioids suddenly. Advanced Pain Treatments Programs can tailor special programs to reduce the medicine gradually so that any withdrawal symptoms can be minimized. If you stop taking opioids suddenly it is likely that you will develop flu-like symptoms, excessive perspiration, diarrhea, or many other reactions. These symptoms can be treated and tend to disappear in a few days to a few weeks.
